What is Popoyo? What does it mean? Is it a region?

Popoyo is a Nicaraguan toponym of Chorotega origin, meaning “joining” or “pairing.” It is also the name of one of the most beautiful beaches on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, located in the department of Rivas.

The Popoyo coffee profile is inspired by this part of the country, where volcanoes, earthquakes, sand, waves, wind, and natural thermal waters come together. Much like its origin, Popoyo reflects a unique balance, an expression of the peace, relaxation, and richness of life that nature can offer when all these elements converge.

The producers of Popoyo are mostly young people and young adults whose lives are deeply connected to coffee. They come from families with a long coffee-growing tradition, where knowledge and passion for this crop have been passed down from generation to generation.

Within their households, the men take on the roles of fathers and providers, actively participating in both coffee production and family life. They also support complementary initiatives with their wives, such as baking bread or preparing nacatamales for sale in the community. Some continue their technical studies, show interest in areas such as automotive and motorcycle mechanics, or participate in local baseball leagues.

The producers of the Popoyo lot share a deep sense of aspiration. Some dream of building or improving their wet mills; others of acquiring more land to expand their production.

A Note from Ryan @ COI:

This is our 2nd year securing the Popoyo lot but our 1st year getting to go down and spend time with the producers and Cosecha Partners team behind this lot. We witnessed a lot of beautiful things in the people regarding their eagerness to learn, willingness to serve, and the excitement that comes from renewed hope as a byproduct of growing partnerships.

Pertaining to this lot in particular, although we honestly expected a solid 83-level blender quality, we were pleased to be blown away and met with a cup filled with complexity, body, and incredible balance. Every time I’ve cupped it with different roast profiles, it still surprises me in the best ways. I believe this is fruit of good relationships and the fruit of the work Cosecha Partners is doing in the region working with agroforestry, biodiversity initiatives, and regenerative organics. Although lower elevation, I think we’ll continue to see big results out of these relationships!

We hope that you’ll find this cup profile to meet and exceed your desired needs. Although our greater hope is that this be a year after year start to a continual relationship. (We’ve got big plans to keep growing with Cosecha Partners in Nicaragua and we’d like to ask for your help!)
