The story behind these Geshas begins with Don Gerson, who initially viewed Geshas as merely an overhyped varietal or a sophisticated marketing strategy. However, his perception shifted when he tasted his own gesha lots for the first time. This moment led him to plant more gesha plants not for market outlets, but because he was captivated by their exceptional taste and the way they grew as he cared for them.
Don Gerson’s admiration and love for the gesha varietal grew so much that his friends and family began playfully teasing him about having a second wife. Currently residing in the city of Huehuetenango, approximately a four to five-hour drive from his farm in Hoja Blanca, Don Gerson dedicates his weekly travels to nurturing his gesha plants. Between laughs with his neighbors he openly expresses his love for his coffee plants, he talks to them and tells them that he loves them.
Don Gerson has been working for 30 years in coffee, he inherited two pieces of land in distinct locations in Hoja Blanca from his mother, who had inherited them from her father. As part of the third generation in his family to work with coffee, Don Gerson was fortunate enough to receive two portions of land, one of which is significantly larger than the other. These parcels of land are commonly referred to as “Pante,” with the larger referring as “Pante Grande” and the smaller one as “Pante Pequeña.”
In honor of his Dad, Don Gerson continues to name this plot Pante Grande and blessed it with his best coffees!
For us, these coffees are 100% of everything we look for in good coffees. Complexity, depth, body, sweetness, but more importantly, a beautiful and true story that we are given the privilege to honor and represent.
