Better Relationships, Better Communities, Better Coffees…
This lot comes from one of our youngest producers, Jorge Nichols. Jorge is the owner and manager of Finca San José located in Nueva Santa Rosa, Guatemala. Much like many of the other regions we work in, Nueva Santa Rosa has been a coffee producing community since the late 1800’s and yet is kind of a hidden gem. The region has historically been known for producing more commodity grade coffees but has recently desired to produce more specialty grade coffees as a way to provide better opportunities and wages to their local coffee producing communities.
Jorge Nichols is perhaps the forerunner of this movement in the region of Nueva Santa Rosa. He’s done perhaps the most amount of leg work behind advocating for his region and investing in the infrastructure and knowledge to begin producing and representing better grade coffees from his region.
This lot is the work of 4-5 years of trial and error. When we first met Jorge in 2021, we loved the relationship side of things but found his lots to be lacking in complexity.
Over the years, he’s been eager for our feedback and even took a CQI Q-Processing course to further his understanding and the impact processing has on quality.
This year, we' were blown away by the results. His washed lot is an amazing, simple and sweet look into the beloved Guatemalan coffees we all love.
More than great coffee, Jorge aspires to produce great coffee as a way to honor his grandfather meanwhile providing greater benefits to his community and the greater region!
